The First "Optical
Comparator" in this country was introduced in 1919 by Mr. Hartness and Mr.
Porter of the
JONES & LAMSON MACHINE COMPANY.
Mr. Hartness who had already
designed the first self-opening die head for cutting threads, recognized the
difficulties in checking all elements of screw threads and therefore enlisted
the services of Mr. Porter in the design of a optical method of projecting light
across the thread form onto a screen for comparison to a master layout.
Thus the Optical Comparator
was invented out of necessity.
The Optical Comparator will
always have a place in industry as it remains today a versatile, accurate and
cost effective measuring tool.
The Optical Comparator is
used in Aircraft, Electronic, Automotive and Machine Tool facilities on both the
shop floor and in QC labs across the globe.
J&L Metrology recent design
developments include mechanical slide improvements, Fiber Optic surface
illumination, Digital Chart Rings, Joystick controlled Servo Drives and
Automatic Inspection Systems "AIS" for documented inspection functions.
